Tao Te Ching – Verse 47 – Without opening your door, you can open your heart to the world

Tao Te Ching – Verse 47

Without opening your door,
you can open your heart to the world.
Without looking out your window,
you can see the essence of the Tao.
The more you know,
the less you understand.
The Master arrives without leaving,
sees the light without looking,
achieves without doing a thing.

(translation by Stephen Mitchell, 1995)

Without going out the door, know the world
Without peering out the window, see the Heavenly Tao
The further one goes
The less one knows

Therefore the sage
Knows without going
Names without seeing
Achieves without striving

(translation by Derek Lin, 2006)

Traversing the terrain does little.
But traversing the terrain within reveals All.
Star-gazing is for children,
Unless it is with eyes closed,
Then the Universes can be bathed in.
